Hi,

l have nicely modified Boxster with a GIAC chip and cold flow intake.I've been driving the car pretty conservatively until recently.l was shifting into third the other day and missed the gear-the engine revved up to 6500 in neutral-that is not harmful is it?(l realize this could be a wimpy question)

In general, shifting between 4000-5000rpms+ from time to time should not cause engine problems should it?

l wanna balance enjoying the car with avoiding expensive repairs...the car currently has 60k miles.

As long as you do NOT go into red line, it does not matter.

Once the engine is in RED LINE, the valves can clash. So either your valved clashed (and damaged) or NOT. It is not about some EXTRA wear.

So if your engine runs right, then do not do not worry.

Good Luck.

revving it at high rpm,s can damage it, l own a older model 944 that l drive as an every day car & l missed a gear in it once,it made a lot of noise but it did not hurt the engine in it,i would not make it a practice though to over rev it,they will take a lot though , l am not sure how many miles mine has on it the speedometer has not worked in a few years, but the engine has held together in it,your good with that one with the low miles on it,that car should last a lot longer ,id just try & not miss too many gears in it or over rev it to many times, good luck.

Your car has a rev limiter. You cannot over rev your motor. And stop driving your car like a girl (apologies to women). This is a purebred road machine. Let it out once in a while. Sissys and poseurs shift at 4-5 thou. Get it up to the redline and enjoy the car the way it was meant to be driven. If your getting more than 10,000 mies on a set of tires your not driving it right. If you want to shift at 4-5 thou sell the Porsche and get a Toyota.

Revving the engine up to 6000-7000 in neutral is not harmful.

Changing gears at 4000-5000rpm is not harmful.

Even changing gears at redline is not harmful.

But staying at high rpms does hurt them.
For example, if u stay in 3rd gear on the highway, u might be driving at 6500rpm. Staying at that that rpm for a long time is bad & could overheat ur engine.

Porsche engines r strong. Porsche is known for making the best sportscars & that is what they have been doing for the past 60 years.
Their engines r tested many times at high speeds & rpm is before being put into production. They can take a beating.

You're ok, is not Red-line 6,500 or 6,700 rpm on that engine? Two things can happen and would be evident if you hurt the engine. Rod Bolt Stretch or Valve Contact with Pistons. It would be making some strange sounds like a hammer tapping upon engine deceleration or it would have a distinct engine misfire respectively.

Porsches are designed to run at high revs compared to US cars and that wo not hurt anything, so long as the engine is warmed up first.

No it would not do much damage. As long as it did not go into the red. with a Porsche that is probably 8000 RPM right? Na do not think it did. Why did you modify it like that. You should have left it looking plain. Looks way better when its plain. At least you just did the front. nice car anyway

Those mods.. :(
Are you sure that is not a Toyota MR2?

All Porsches (except the GT3 and GT2) have a max rev of 6500, so it should not be harmful to the engine. If the car had 200,000 miles and thirty years old then yeah, it would be harmful. There is nothing wrong with sporty shifting either!
