The US version of the 944 is legal in the US, with the possible exception of California. While the US cars sold in CA & elsewhere were identical by the time the 944 was produced, the licensing process is different, & a car that was not originally delivered into CA will require a few additional hoops to be surmounted in order to get the car registered.

Likewise, cars that were delivered in RoW trim (Rest of the World, as most Porsches r built as either RoW or US versions) can be federalized, but it can be a difficult process, & if ur goal is to have a usable 944, it would be better to buy a US version (or at least a grey market car that someone else has already gone through the trouble of making US legal).

You should be able to register this vehicle in any state here in the U.S. , given that it has all the smog equipment & that it is not a gray market car. Even if the car was a 49 state vehicle, (Not Certified for California) it should be able to bring it into California if they vehicle has over 7,500 miles on it when u bought it. Most of these would have that many miles l would think.

So yes, u should be Legal if it is unaltered from the Factory & is not a Gray Market car. (Gray Market car is a car that was should outside the U.S. & brought into the U.S. & it may not have all the DOT safety equipment like side impact door braces, etc)
