l was thinking of getting a 1998/9 porsche boxster at the end of the year for about 10k ($20k), ignoring the petrol prices and the 17mpg, how much will it actually cost me per year, things like servicing, repairs etc.
Thanks for any help Kelly Belly: Been a full time student at college somewhat limits me financially, beats the Peugeot 106 is everyone else my age is driving.

l do not know exact prices but oil changes can be up to $300 or $400. Maintainence and repairs are going to be expensive. Also, you have to use premium gas which costs more.

l do not know, but what if u u bought a cheaper car, & invested the rest of the money, then that money would actually grow. There is the thought that what u invest doubles in 7 yrs. It does not always happen that way, but if u invested $5,000 of that money, you'd have $10,000 in 7 yrs. This just worked for me. l invested one whole paycheck years ago, & decided I'd only take it out when l needed it. In January 2007, l was able to put $7000 down on a car, from a check that was originally about $4000. So, there r many ways to look at ur investment.

Thanks l was wonder what the real price was. A lot of the to your question will depend largely on how you drive.

l owed a Porsche 911 ( 2001) .. l spend about 120 for oil change, depending on the millage, the 60k Miles maintenance is about 800.00 dollars..but the cars are very reliable..never had a problem until l wrecked it.

l own a 2003 Porsche Boxster & l love driving my car. The 98/99 Boxster has a 2.5l flat 6 vs a 2.7 flat 6 in my 2003. l currently get 21 mpg on my Boxster, so the 98/99 should be able to get 22-23 mpg (premium only). l have a breakdown of the actual costs I've incurred while I've owned my car.
Maintenance = $125 (for every 15K miles). This is for an oil change & filter (the crankcase is large & it uses 100% synthetic) done at my mechanics shop, not the dealership (they quoted me $721). My car has 29K miles on it, so l have not had any other maintenance yet.
Luckily my car has been under warranty (until last August). Repairs that were completed under warranty: Drivers side seat belt recepticle broken, ignition (lock cylinder) broken, rear wind break - broken, stereo replaced two times, convertible top hinge repaired (driver is side), new battery & my engine blew at 22K miles. All items fixed by Porsche, so no cost to me, except the down time.
Tires r still factory Michelin Pilot Sport (great tires, but pretty thin now). Brakes still original. Rear tires r $250ish & fronts r $200 ish.
If u can afford to buy a Boxster, do it! These cars r true Porsches. I've owned quite a few Porsches & my Boxster is the best. l currently own a 996 coupe (911 water cooled) & when l decide which car l want to drive, l chose the Boxster over my 996. My Boxster out handles my 996. l feel like l am fighting my 996, but when l am driving my Boxster - she goes where l want her to & l do not feel like l am fighting the steering wheel. l can take corners at higher speeds in my Boxster vs my 996. The place where my 996 shines is a extremely high speeds & acceleration, but my Boxster has seen 155 mph - not shabby for a little 2.7.
Just make sure u buy the lowest mileage Boxster & make sure the maintenance has been done on time. If u can find a car with an extended warranty, pay a little extra. Most important, ignore the jealous people & all the little things they say. There is no comparison between a Boxster & a Miata, except that both r two seat roadsters with four tires - that is where the comparison ends. l considered the following cars when l purchased my Boxster: 350Z roadster, Z4, SLK, Chrysler Crossfire, Honda S2000, Audi TT & the Miata Speed. The decision came down to either the Z4 or the Boxster & l chose Porsche.
Good luck & enjoy ur Porsche 986!

It really depends. Stuff like oil changes r $200-300. Beyond that it depends on how well ur car works out for you. You could be lucky & have very low maintenance fees or u might get a car that has problems.
Stuff like tires r also different. While u can buy just normal tires the whole point of having a Porsche is performance so u will need performance tires to have that. Good tires will cost u over $1200+ which is 2-3 times the cost of normal tires.
There is also stuff like if u lose a key it will cost u $100-150 to get a new one while for other cars l am sure it is just a couple of dollars.
As a general rule l am not a fan of buying old luxury goods nor of buying cars that r almost 10 years old . You do not get the same cache as buying a new Porsche & even though they r great cars & will have a lot less problems than most 10 year old cars -- nevertheless it is a ten year old car & that is when cars start having expensive problems.

Remember, the first model year was 97. l spoke with a certified Porsche mechanic before purchasing my boxster(s) he was helpful in explaing that the 99 model year had several upgrades that worked out the bugs from the first model years (97/98). The 2000 had a few more upgrades & 2001 & up r awesome. If u r going to purchase a low mileage (40K miles or less) '99/2000 expect to pay around 20K. Oil changes should be done by a porsche dealer which helps retain the value. Oil changes r $200 to $300 but only need to be done every 15K so its not really that bad if u figure u change ur oil every 3K in a regualr car at $45 which would be $225. One boxster l owned needed a purge valve replaced at 12K it ran about $300. If u r not worried about reselling at a later date there r oil change places that use MOBILE1 Sythetic (required) & will change the oil for $60. Also, the others r correct ur Boxster will require Premium Unleaded (93) $$$ Keep in mind the rear tires can get expensive when time to replace. There r several ''good'' deals on EBay but ever wonder why every Boxster on there has 58 to 65K? Because Porsche requires a 60K service by a certified Porsche dealer or mechanic to hold the value. The 60K service is a minumum $1,000.00 depending on the condition of the water pump ( l suggest having the water pump replaced during the 60K service. They have already taken everything apart so u really only pay for the pump) So plan on paying $1,300 for ur 60K service. So depending on how many miles u drive, plan on $300 to $500 a year plus gas$$$ (if u r a safe driver Insurance is cheap)
