l know Porsche is concentrating on the Le Mens series, but would'nt it be nice to see Porsche in f1? l wonder why they arent?

Would you want to pay the insurance on that?

Would it be something related to the class of the engine positiion, wheel base, weight class, hp?

Because Formula One cars are specifically designed for F1.

The Porsche has no way to keep up with a Formula One car.

hmmm dont know, but f1 is crazy stuff, drove the mercedes in Forza 2. fastest car ever..

Maybe Porsche test their engines better in Lemans and Grand Tourism Categories than F1.

They were from 1957 unitll 1964.
They also competed in F1 as engine suppliers supplying engines badged as TAG units for the McLaren Team in the 1980 is and engines badged as ''Footwork'' on the 1990's.

l guess they just think it would be too expensive too compete and not add value to the overall brand enough to justify the cost.

It is really about money. Porsche has completed in many forms of motorsport over the years, though it is been a solid 10 years now since they have had a werks (ie, Factory based) team in any racing series, & an F1 team would have to be a factory effort as the current rules prohibit customer cars (even if Toro Roso & Super Aguri r working around that at the moment).

What that means is that the teams in Formula 1 make the cars they run. Porsche is efforts in motorsports at the moment r to build cars which they sell to someone else (although in the case of the LMP2 Spyders, there is alot of factory support that comes along with the $1.5 million price tag).

Porsche have said many times in regards to F1 as well as other series, that they r not interested in merely competing, they r interested in winning. Toyota is widely rumored to be spending $600 million a year on their Formula 1 effort, with Mclaren & Ferrari not far behind. As we've seen with Toyota, simply spending money is not enough, but it is one element. Given that Porsche is generally very good with racing & has alot of in house knowledge, it could be optimistically considered that they could be competitive within three years at spending ONLY $450-500 million a year (though initial startup costs would push that number higher). There is no way that such an effort would work out for a company as small as Porsche.

So the real question would become, would they want to enter F1 in order to run a back marker on the $100 million a year budget, where the entry would not be competitive & would not exactly bring them greater brand recognition? This goes back to the point that they r interested in winning. & in Formula 1, that is not in the budget at the moment (they have said a factory Le Mans effort is out for the same reasons, which would be alot less costly than an F1 season).

The best chance to see Porsche in F1 would be if one of the existing teams partnered with Porsche by paying them to develop an F1 engine & other parts (like the Tag Mclarens). But this seems fairly unlikely with Ferrari, Renault, & Toyota happily offering customer engines.

l would guess for the same reason Honda or Ferrari does not compete in NHRA.
