l left out 993 because some people do not know what a 993 is! The 993 is a Porsch 911. The 993 refers to the model of 911 produced 1995- 1998. The 95 993 had 274 hp with a 3.6 liter engine and then Porsche redesigned the induction system and increased the hp to 284 with the same 3.6 liter engine in 1996. l do know that in the Porsche performance book by Anderson it is suggested to increase the displacment on the 911 models. For example take a 3.0 liter 911 and increase to 3.2 etc. B&B has a great exhaust system with headers. Porsche also had a sport suspension package as an upgrade in 96. This car is stock and l just want opinion on what should be done first and so on to reach the best balance for a street car.

best way to improve performance on a normally aspirated engine is to improve breathing. Intake and exhaust are always my first choices.

anything you do will hurt the value....leave it stock..it is a fine car the way it is

Unless it is a 993 C2S, a turbo or GT2 u r not going to hurt the value that much by doing anything to it.

You've pretty much answered ur question already but basically on a stock normally aspirated engine, u can upgrade the intake & exhaust easily for a few more horsepower. If u want to go beyond that, u can bore & stroke the motor, add forced injection, etc. It really all depends on what u want to spend.

Porsches r no different than other cars when it comes to the formula of what makes it faster. All gasoline engines use the same ideas for performance. Figure out ur budget, talk to some Porsche shops & get an idea of what u can afford & what is worth ur time & money.

Good luck!

First things to do is the Exhaust system and ECU Performance chip.
Next is the Cold Air Intake.
Next is the Suspension system for handling and performance tires.
If you are rich, get the twin turbo system from the 911 Turbo to add an extra 100HP.

the best thing to do,is buy a new air filter, which will bost the h.p by 5.will if ya have a lot of money buy a new engine,xt2 porsche engine ,works the best with the 96, 97, 02 ,types,

ignor the 6 guys above me. porsche spends alot of time and money testing on dynos. adding a different airfilter isnt going to make a noticable change. neither will a different exauhst. leave the car alone. if anyone disagrees, go make the changes and show me the results on a dyno before and after. you wont see any worth bother for.

The first thing u need to do is define just what it is u r hoping to get from ur 993. Bruce Anderson puts out some very clear ideas on increasing HP on the 3.6L cars. but the truth is, on this or most any Porsche, more power is not the best way to increase performance.

So what is it u r really looking for? Do u want to run away from stop lights quicker? Are u looking to get out of corners quicker? Or r u planning to go into time trials or open track events & want to see ur lap times decrease?

As a generalization, there r two major factors that limit the performance of every car: The tires, & the driver. Whatever ur goal, upgrading either of these will give u more performance increase for ur buck than any other method. With tires of course, u will be trading comfort & longevity for grip - but u cannot get this performance anywhere else, & it will affect all aspects of ur car, from acceleration to braking & also cornering.

And improving the driver is even better. The sad fact is, even if u have quite a bit of experience in performance driving and/or racing, u r probably still the most limiting factor. but the good news is that small improvements to ur skill can pay big dividends in helping u take advantage of everything ur 993 can already do: attend an autocross school or some driver ed events (PCA puts both on in many regions around the country).

After that, u then have to look at the car. And again, before looking at the engine, l would look at the week points of the 993. Namely weight! The 993 is quite porky! If u really want to pursue more performance, look at ways to reduce weight. Even if u do not want to go on a major diet & give up the luxuries that make it weigh so much, u can just look at the wheels. The stock wheels on these cars r quite heavy. saving a few pounds here can have a big effect since this is unsprung rotating mass. A good forged lightweight wheel should save at least 5 pounds per wheel, which is about the same as gaining 4hp (and similar gain in braking & cornering). Looking at replacing other parts to trim the weight can make gains (though the wheels can have a larger effect for less trimmed).

All of these things will give u great gains for whatever u r looking for. At this point, if u r looking to zoom away from stop lights quicker, u will need to look at the engine. If u r looking to actually go faster, then the next place to look would be car is set up. a more aggressive alignment along with corner balancing & getting the ride height adjusted to a correct height (most likely closer to the Euro spec) will get rid of the stock alignment is understeer, & should feel nicely neutral, & very balanced under braking. & ultimately maximize the car as it is. After that, springs & shocks, & the addition of adjustable anti-roll bars.

To compare. u would probably need to add 100-200hp to make up the lap time difference that a good track oriented tire would give you. 50-75hp might make up the difference that a good set of adjustable anti-roll bars would give u in terms of actual performance. These r the things that REALLY make the car perform. After that, u need to look to the engine. where remapping to advance the spark will give u some small gains, as will a more open exhaust (the two done together can be a little better). But the fact is, most upgrades beyond that will be expensive enough that u may simply want to consider upgrading to a different car (rebuilding to increase the displacement will likely cost in the $20k range).

Lastly, since this is a street car, u will need to ask just how far u want to go (aside from the cash part). Making a car that tries to balance everything tends to be a car that does nothing well. Ask yourself what u like most about the car & what you'd be willing to do without, because as u move the car to be more performance oriented, it will come in the form of trading off some other aspect.

l have a B&B exhaust on my 1990 964 and it is grea. It is just the cat-back, but l got the dual outlet version. I've had it for about 7 years and it is just great. A bit loud, but l get alot of compliments. It adds performance but l never got a dyno as l have a C4 and it is too much of a pain to get to a 4 wheel dyno. It also increases performance by decreasing weight.

Hey, l would personally choose to just keep it stock. Porsche just is not the kind of car you would tune up under a lot of circumstances. It is a great car, its not as if it needs anything done to it.
