$7800 asking. Have two small children l can stuff into the back ''seats''. Has oil leaks, needs a little brake work, pops a bit at idle, and runs a tad rough, but it has been sitting in a garage for ten years, although started frequently. . Exhaust clean, no rust, nice paint, collector is plates. Clutch and tranny good (sometimes grinds a little in first if you do not take your time). New rubber, handles like a go kart., quiet motor. New stereo. Looks nice.
Is this a good year to gamble on? l like the looks, the outside oil flap, and the interior room in front. It is a character car, and if l am lucky with the leaks, it will only cost me $$$$$$, right?
Ok, now tear away my dream, and save my children, l am ready................... (Has manual fuel injection)

Buy a $3000 used piece-o'-sh*t car. Put $4000 into two Uniform Transfer to Minors Accounts to fund college tuition. Put $800 into the bank and use it for Car Insurance.
That is what your not thinking of. What is insurance on a Porsche compared to a Toyota? There is a $500 P.O.S. car somewhere on the roads with that Porsche is name written on the hood. l would not think your kids would want to experience a rear-end collison in your porsche.

This car is a collertor, A rebuilt trans will cost between $2500 and $4500 depending on what is going on in the trans. Oil leaks can be anything from valve covers to heads leaking, find parts for these old porsches anr hard to find and finding someone qualified to work on the car is hard too. This car is a great car but will cost $$$ when it need anytype of repair

911 is r not the best choice for back seat passengers regardless of their age as it is small & cramped. The most important thing u need to keep in mind is ur childrens safety if u choose to drive them around in this thing. Those cars did not require the same crash testing as the newer ones do, the seat belts r lap belts, it is smaller than new 911 is & more importantly u have to consider what u would do if u break down on the side of a busy interstate which is likely to happen in a car that old & in that kind of condition.
If u have a different daily driver, go for it. If this will be ur primary vehicle it warrants some serious consideration not only about what u want, but what is good for ur passengers.
Now to the $$$ part. A wiseman once told me that it is not the price of the car, it is the price of repairs. Think about this, u can buy older Ferraris particularly Mondials in the teens these days. But, they will still cost quite a bit of money to repair & maintain. A better example, u can buy the 996 TT for half of what they sold for new, but u will still pay the service costs of a car that was $140,000.00 brand new.
While a 1972 911 is not going to be ridiculously expensive in relation to a modern 911 repairwise, it will certainly be more often. It sounds like this car will need a rebuild to be reliable so pricing that out around town may not be a bad idea. l am willing to guess that a rebuild will be equal to about what u will pay for the car itself.
Buy it, tuck it away in the garage & play with it when u have the money. That is the only way to do a car like that on a budget.

The last of the ''long hood'' 911s r among the more desirable cars from a collector & enthusiast point of view. Though the 911T was the entry level car, thus also the most numerous & least desirable of these (but still a great car, & not a bad bet to get as far as it is likely to gain in value).
$7800 sounds like a low price for a good condition car. I've noticed all of the early 911s getting more pricey in the last few years, & this is about half of what l would expect of a car somewhere between good & excellent condition. As such, it is worth taking a closer look at the possible problem spots. First, it is unlikely to find a pre-galvanized 911 without ANY rust unless it is been restored. Even the California cars of this age will often show some rust - it would be worth ur time on this alone to have a knowledgeable Porsche mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection.
As for the oil leak, again worth the opinion of a good mechanic, but the truth is that the older air cooled cars often leak some, & that if it is only some it is probably just a result of age. And the transmission sounds normal - the 901 5 speed which is in this car requires a little patience & finesse.
It is a fun car, & if u find the quirky aspects of these cars to be ''character,'' then you've already been charmed (personally, l find these cars extremely charming). But it is worth taking a step back & looking at the car. at $7800, the car could be a fantastic buy. Given the increasing rarity of these cars, u should see prices go up (again, my experience has seen 2.4L 911T models going in the mid teen to $20k range). But that is IF it is really in good condition, & is either as original as possible (or has good documentation on any major work. since something like painting can be done to hide rust problems).
Porsches r well built & reliable cars, though like any older car, something of this age can be susceptible to various issues. And major problems can be very expensive. Make sure u do all ur homework, & find a good mechanic to take a look at it before buying (a cheap Porsche can too often become the most expensive car u will own). But as l said, if it is really in good condition & not suffering from hidden problems, it sounds like a great buy (and while the rear seats would be punishing for an adult, they work quite well for children who, in my experience, often enjoy having seats that r sized right for them).

Buying the 72 911 can be alot of fun because u can do alot to increase the performance & ride. My first concern would be rust & possible crash damage repair. Look look at the filler strip betw the front bumper & the body. This should be flat & not wavey or bumpy. If it is worn it is easy to replace just look for rust & a good indication is that strip if it is bumpy it is probably rust. Also look at the headlights & ck for squareness & rust. This could show accident damage & repair. Ck the front suspension pickups for rust also a common area for corrosion because the eailier models were not galvanized. Another thing u can ck-run ur finger along the fender lip. Porsche places a textured finish on these to protect from chipping if one fender does'nt have that it is an indication of poor repair. Most autobody shops r not that critical & will not replace the texture. Remember remove the lights & look for rust. You should find a mech that works on Porsches or a dealer & do a leak down test & compression. The compression reading on a healthy engine should be 130-170 psi. 5-15%leakage is OK. l would say that u can easily spend 10,000 on just going thru the engine & if u paint the care another 4000.00. So if u do not plan on spendig the necessary money to make the car 100% l would not buy it but if u do u can have a grate car to play with. If u have to replace the clutch u should convert to the RS flywheel & clutch & if ur engine is running great maybe upgrade ur suspension srings & shockes & maybe go with the B&B exhaust & headers u might get 20 more hp out of it. But definately fix all leaks. Goog luck

My advice get an expert to inspect it. A vintage Porsche specialist is what u need. Spend the money now & u will know exactly what is wrong with it upfront. This will cost u upto $500 but it is well worth the investment. Go to the Porsche Club USA or rennlist http://forums.rennlist.com/ to get a recommendation near you.
$7800 is cheap. Bear in mind there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche. Engine rebuild budget $10K, bodywork same again.
l walked away from one car before getting my 1969 becasue it would have been a money pit. Looked good, sounded great but the specialist found things l missed.
Good luck
