l dunno about years to stay away from, but definately lean towards the newest one u can get, & yes the Boxster S is worth it. It accelerates faster, stops faster, & handles better & smoother (not that the plain one does not go fast, stop fast enough, or handle well enough..the Boxster S just does it better.) Take a drive of both, & ask yourself if its worth the difference, u may find the base boxster is good enough for you, or u may find the Boxster S is what appeals to you.

It is most definitely worth the money, l would not buy a standard boxer. also l wouldnot buy a tiptronic or a boster without a glass rear window. and ive driven mmore then my share of them.
cheers

l would go for a Base Cayman before shelling out the extra for the S version of the Boxster, just as one should go for the base model 911 instead of a Cayman S.
But that is just my opinion.
If you are going used, l would buy no earlier than 2003 +

the s model is significantly faster than the base model for any given year. l have seen porsche techs recommend staying away from '99 and older models. so, your best bet money-wise is a 2000-2001 boxster s. as always, if you can afford a newer or low mileage version, get it. also note that a 2005+ base model is about as fast as an older s model..lastly a late model s is the cream of the crop. oh,and buy from a meticulous owner if possible. good luck :)

l do not know if l would outright avoid some years, but the first year of production showed the most problems (nothing major, & mostly things that would have been sorted out by now).
As to if the ''S'' is worth the extra cost: yes & no. If u r looking at the car & looking at the items that make the ''S'' what it is & thinking u want that, it is an absolute bargain (to upgrade a regular Boxster to the same would cost many times more than the price difference, & still not have the same engine or resale value).
However, if the extra performance does not matter, then the base level is a much better buy. While Porsches r performance cars, not all buyers r looking for the higher levels of performance. The base Boxster is a great car & well worth having.
But if u think u r wanting more, then definitely go for the ''S,'' or u will spend many days asking yourself why u didn't.
