Which would win around a track

depends on the track and the degree of improvement the chip gives. The 944 handles better, but the evo has a lot more power.

That is a tough call, but l guess the Evo would win. But the Evo has twenty years of new technology and the 944 would still put up a fight. l actually think the 944 would win in a drag race. Those go 0-60 in 5 seconds. So, idk. Tough call.

While it would depend on some other factors, overall the Evo would have a massive advantage.

The Evo has 291hp with 300lb/ft of peak torque in a 3600 pound package that pulls just about 1.0G of lateral load on street tires! That is a nice package & one that will (and does) perform quite well around a track. AWD is a nice bonus too.

The 951 is no slouch. in stock form has 217hp with peak torque of 243lb/ft, in a 3000 pound package. It is well balanced & has great handling. but it wo not be generating the same kind of grip as the Evo unless u r moving on to R-Comp Tires.

Where the 951 is pretty quick, being able to get up to 60 miles per hour in less than 6 seconds, the Evo is nearly a second quicker! And around a track. a stock 951 with a good driver would likely be capable of lapping around Laguna Seca in the high 1:40 to low 1:50 range; the Evo would be about 10 seconds a lap faster. In short, no contest.

So what difference would a chip make? You can reasonably expect to pick up a pretty solid 20 or even 30hp with a good chip in the turbo models. Around a typical road course, this could figure to a gain of as much as two seconds. in short, still a long long ways behind the Evo.

The two areas where the 951 would have an advantage would be reliability (and for that, you're better off without the chip), & brakes. It is built much better than the Evo & even in stock form will hold up to fairly brutal & prolonged use (brakes included). Given a long (6 hour+) endurance race, the 951 could stand a better chance (and long as there was other competition that forced the Evo to run hard enough that it would suffer from heat build up issues & brake problems, because the 951 would not be fast enough on it is own to force the Evo to keep a pace that could cause these problems. though Mitshubishi is due seem prone to breaking at the track even under light stress sometimes). Otherwise, with equal drivers, the Evo will be much much faster.

If u wanted to get better lap times with a 951, power would be the last thing to address: An aggressive R-Comp Tire (Hoosier or V710) would get u 3-4 seconds. Large adjustable ARBs: 2 more seconds. Stiffer Shocks/springs: another second. Poper setup & tuning of the suspension (and corner balancing): another second. Get rid of excess weight (the stock power seats alone, replaced with race shells would trim about 100 pounds from the car): 2 seconds! And now, u r right on par with the Evo. add the chip on top of that, & you're faster (assuming the Evo does not upgrade tires, or do anything. & if u r really wanting to add power, there r probably better long term strategies than starting with the chip).
