l have heard horror stories about the old 944 is in the 80's.l hear that at around 100,000 miles, the gearbox could literally explode. And when this happened and my friend brought it into the Porsche dealer to fix it the mechanic said noncalantly, ''oh yeah, they all do that eventually.''

Well, l am looking at a 2002 911 Targa for $25,000.l have heard stupendous things about the 911 about how it could be driven every day.l wanna know if they have fixed their reliability record since the 944, and would this be a good buy?It has 75,000 miles on it.

anything expensive will be reliable

Well, the only main thing l know about Porsches is that the more classic they are, the more expensive they are.

any performance machine has a short life, and constant maintenance. stars that burn brighter burn faster. If you baby it, it will last past 100,000. Raceing is very expensive

Heck yeah they are. They are about as reliable as the electrical system on a Range Rover. Ummm, second though..you might want to rethink things.

The 944, 924, 928, and 968 were not so reliable Porsche's. These cars had 4 cylinder engines. Porsche 4 cylinders were not so great.

But the Porsche 911, 914, 959, Boxster, and Cayman are very reliable cars. These are 6 cylinders. Porsche 6 cylinder cars are very good.

The Porsche 914 is reliable and had a 4 cylinder engine, but that 4 cylinder engine is the one used in the VW Van.

The answer to this question depends on which Porsche model u r referring to. Any model within the Porsche product line, whether a current Porsche or an older model, will exhibit quirks & issues that may characterize that model. For example, 911s of the late 80s & early 90s were known for their oil leaks. And all 911s of the 996 series & Boxsters have flat six engines that will periodically demonstrate oil leaks because of a very well known rear main seal problem.

But l am a Porsche owner & l can tell u that from my experience these cars r extremely good performers & seem to have a favorable repair rate. My car is almost five years old & nothing major has ever hampered its performance. Nearly all issues have been minor & were fully covered by the Porsche warranty.

For new Porsches, they r typically impeccably finished. l can tell u from a personal Porsche factory tour in Stuttgart recently that Porsche 911s r also very much hand assembled the good old fashioned way. And JD Powers has recently ranked Porsche #1 in new car satisfaction for several years in a row new.

So, l say if u can afford one, buy one! You wo not be disappointed.

hi l have a 944 and it has a lot of electric problems.
As to your question my answer is you may be able to afford to buy a porsche but can you afford to fix it. For my 944 here is a price list for parts l replaced alternator--$750,ball joint $450 and mufler $ 500 Just a short list to give you an example of what is cost to fix a porsche and then you must pay the dealer labor about $ 95 dollars and hour Good luck

l would say they r very reliable WITH proper maintenance. l used to drive my 86 944 daily, & it had the reliability of a quartz clock. That does not mean l did not put a lot of money into it service wiese (30k service, updating the notorious weak spots, wear & tear items, etc.) but aside from that it was a very solid car, very well built, excellent quality & very fun to drive. Hell, i'd wager easily that my 23 year old 944 is of a better quality materials & engineering wise than ANYTHING the big three or japanese r crapping out. It is stood the test of time amazingly & probably looks, runs & drives nearly the same as when it left the showroom new.

l know that some of the older Porsche is had their problems, however that is very much fixed. For example a Ferrari with 40,000 miles would be a bit of a problem. Very few people would want to touch it. A Porsche though, not problem. My 997 C4S needs serviced once every 20,00 mile or every 2 years. To put that in to perspective Ferrari is need serviced ever couple thousand miles. It is a brilliant car. It can be used every day (which l do) & can even cope with a bit of snow.

My advice would be so spend a couple more thousand & get a 911 with lower mileage. Although the one u r looking at should be fine (if it has been maintained & looked after properly) it may be a bit tricky to sell. Purely because people r put off high mileage cars.
l think u should look for one with a full Porsche dealer service history (that way u know it is been looked after), go for one that has 50,000 miles or less & enjoy it.

Hope that helps

That was back in the day and the 944s were made by Audi in Neckarsulm. 911s are a different story, especially the newer ones. They are not as punishing to the passengers and are very reliable. l have heard that 2001 models were bad, but not 2002. Targas are amazing, I'd snatch that right up at that price!
