If is the same model you can do it. The base chasis is the same and if no major modifications to the model itself like a new generation has been made it is possiable to do it. That goes along with other cars. So you could replace a 2004 Pontiac GTO engine with a 2007 Pontiac GTO.

l do not think the transmissions are the same for turbo and non-turbo engines.

Other than that, there should not be a problem.

undress all the engine from the 1986 , then just use the parts from the 1984 they should all match your just using the block and heads P.S. TRY NOT USE AN IMPACT TOOLS ON THESE KIND OF CAR USE HAND TOOLS

should be a very direct swap. If you have the needed tools and knowhow, its very possible.

Here is the safest way to do this (depends if u need the short block or the entire engine).

If u just need the short block, l would take the sensors, manifolds, etc off the old motor & use the parts on the new motor. The reason is that there may be parts that r specific to the 1984 vs the 1986 (mostly smog, sensors & vaccuum lines).

If u need to change the entire engine, l would match up the parts to see if they r the same. Check the connectors, vaccuum lines & fuel lines to make sure they all fit. Also, check the routing of the intake (should be the same).

That should be a pretty easy swap.

You will need the 86 engine computer and airflow meter. However, the engine will physically bolt right in.
