Of course, it is possible there is something wrong with it, even if they were asking a million dollars for it.

The price u quoted, however, if it is a non-turbo, indicates it should be in excellent condition, or else it IS a ripoff; because u can get them anywhere from US$2500 up to about what you've stated for this one.

That said, the rule for any Porsche is ''buy the best & newest u can afford,'' & that goes double for the 944. The 944 was relatively (for a Porsche) high maintenance to begin with, though not so bad as the 928. On top of that, remember, this is a 20-year-old car. It is not cheap nor easy to find parts for a 20-year-old car. And since the 944 is water-cooled, it has a lot more to go wrong with it than a similar-year 911. So a 944 is cheap to buy, but expensive to maintain -- & some models/years r worse than others. Do ur homework, but remember that regardless, 20-year-old shocks give out, 20-year-old rubber hoses burst, 20-year-old heater blowers break, 20-year-old valves need alignment -- & just because ur 944 cost less than an '07 Carrera S does not mean the Porsche mechanic is going to charge u any less to work on it. Usually, it is from US$85 (independent) to $150 (dealership) per hour. Note: never take a 1987 to a dealer, they can not get parts for it, as they r only allowed to buy directly from Porsche, & they do not like working on older Porsches, when they have 2007 997 turbos waiting for service. 'Nuff said.

Bottom line, have a competent Porsche mechanic look at it before u buy. It will probably cost u a couple of hundred dollars max for a pre-purchase inspection, but it will save u thousands in the long run. If u can not afford the pre-purchase inspection, YOU CAN'T AFFORD THE CAR. And remember, even if it checks out perfectly today, a 20-year-old car is a high-maintenance vehicle, with tired parts that r no longer mass produced, & requiring some of the more expensive mechanics on the planet to work on them properly. Mind you, Porsches r much less expensive to maintain than Italian exotics. MUCH LESS. but that does not mean they're cheap.

Good luck, & by the way: Porsches ROCK, regardless of the year, regardless of the cost. l am not so crazy about the 944 though. Fun on a track, but underpowered. :)

Listen to Hagacure. A 20 year old Porsche is a maintenance nightmare waiting to happen. The 944 is a pretty basic car, but parts r going to be a little tough to get & understand that they will break. Maybe not the major stuff (engine/trans/axles), but a lot of the small stuff that is a nuisance & is hard to find.

If this is ur first Porsche, l highly recommend not going with an old 944. Power is so-so. Handling is good. Steering & brakes r excellent. If u like the style, try going with a 968 (newer model & less things to go wrong). Better yet - go with a Boxster. These r very reliable cars, they will blow the doors off a 944, they r fun to drive & they can be serviced by either Porsche (expensive) or by independent mechanics.

You will love the feeling of driving a Porsche (any model). They r responsive & they will make u a better driver. These cars put a smile on ur face!

Good luck.
