l am 16 years old and can get either for around $6000 as my first car (yes l have a job.)
Which is better in terms of performance, fun, sound/head turning

Just wondering also: which would girls like best?

The 944 is better looking. Unless l am incorrect the 928 is faster. l hope your job pays well. Between repairs and insurance it will have to.

You did not ask which one would keep you broke. Both, probably. How can you get nookie when you're broke?

l own a 928 S & had a 951 (944 Turbo), they r both great cars but I'd choose the 928. It is just more car.more power, more luxurious, more options, more resale value. The 951 is a TINY bit faster from 0-60, but the 928 S hit 171mph on the salt flats in the mid 80's, making it the fastest sports car in the World for a little bit. The V8 will also last forever if maintained properly. However, if u do not have deep pockets, the 951 is cheaper to maintain. The girls you're after were not even alive when these cars were on the road, so tell them Tom Cruise drove the 928 in Risky Business & u will do fine :)

The LEAST expensive thing u may do will be actually be buying the car.

Unless u have very deep pockets, u might want to reconsider what ur getting into. Part is on cars which very few were made tend to be very expensive, & Porsches have never been made in mass quanitities.

A smart move may to be able to find a 1986-87 924S(944 mechanicals with a 924 shell). They r simple, easy to repair, & not too expensive to fix/maintain, & make an excellent first Porsche. The Turbo version 944 & 928 r both very expensive to maintain & repair.

As far as the girls are, u want one to hand with u because ur a good guy.not because u own a Porsche. She will love u even if u ride the bus if u got the right stuff.

The reality of either car is not good givent he situation u describe. But first to the actual questions. u do not mention which 928S or 944 Turbo; both of these cars were produced in many versions, some more desirable & better performing than others.

If u were to look at the best of the 928S & the best of the 951 (probably the last 944 Turbo S), you'd find two cars that offer a lot of performance, with the 944 offering a better balanced chasis, but the 928 having the advantage of more cubic inches. Though, being a turbo, & one of the form factors which the factory raced, the 951 (944 Turbo) has many more upgrade options.

Both cars r alot of fun to drive. the 944 cars r probably a little more sporting with the 928 being a little more luxurious. As to which girls would prefer, that will depend on the girl (and is not really a good criteria to decide on a major automotive purchase anyway).

The real problem here is the budget! A good example of either of the cars u mention will run more than $6k. & anything less than a good example will cost u alot (and l do mean ALOT) more in the long run. While these cars have come down to some very cheap prices, parts & service will reflect the fact that they were very expensive when new. Porsches r very reliable cars, as long as they r properly cared for. buying one in questionable condition is a sure fire recipe for spending lots of money (you could quickly top that $6k figure in repairs if there r major problems).

Then there is the issue that these r cars capable of high performance, & not ones ideally suited for an inexperienced driver. While they both have much less ''bite'' than similar era 911s, they r cars that can easily lull an inexperienced driver quickly past their limits. & if this happens in a controlled setting (like an autocross or even a race track), then it is merely a case of having a chance to learn; but elsewhere just means that the best case outcome will be damage to the car (and this comes back to the budget point).

If u r set on looking at a Porsche as a first car, u would be better served looking towards a normally asperated 944 or a 924S. Both cars r fun to drive, but will be more forgiving to an inexperienced driver. And given ur budget, u should be able to pick a well maintained car that is in great condition (and have a good chunk left over for the bank).

Both r a bad choice for a first car. They r far too fast, & far too expensive to fix. Clutch jobs on a 928 r like 2500 bucks, a rear hatch on a 944turbo is like 2k, & other parts r just horridly expensive.

Im only 20, & am a porsche club of america racecar driver, & Im even suggesting not doing it. Theyre just too expensive to fix, even with a job. Remember, when 928s came out, they were the most expensive porsche made, meaning theyre the most expensive to fix.

A good choice would be something like an older BMW 328i. Theyre great fun to drive, very reliable, & can turn into awesome, affordable track cars with a bit of suspension work.
