My husband recently purchased a 2001 Porsche Boxster S and the airbag light is wanting to stay on. To be honest l hate to take it to a dealer beacause l know it will cost. Any suggestions???

Disconnect the negative battery terminal, then quickly tap it against the positive side. Wait fifteen minutes & connect it again. If the light comes back on, u probably have a problem, a $50 hand held scanner can check to see what the trouble code is, & will make figuring out what the problem actually is far easier. Someone u know might have one already, borrow theirs, it will be far less expensive.

l had the same thing on my WRX Limited, & it turns out that the reason that the light was on was because of a sensor that detected whether the light was shut off or not. Both air bags would have retained full functionality, but of course it wo not pass inspection like that. l took it back to the dealership & they replaced it on waranty.

If u r not mechanically inclined or do not want to risk damaging it further, ur best bet is to take it to the dealer for an evaluation. You do not have to have them fix it, but they can tell u quickly why the light is on. Most dealers will not charge u for something this simple & u can decide at that point if it is something u would like to pursue or not.

There r also issues with 996 airbag lights that r caused by a faulty wire in the harness. This does not mean the airbag will not work, it just means the light displays.

To be safe, l would have the dealer test it for you.
