First & foremost: what model r u looking at? The 1980s gave us not only the venerable 911, which is still made to this day, but also the 924 & the 944 - neither of which has been in production past the early 1990s. Both of these latter models were designed to be inexpensive ways for potential buyers to enjoy a Porsche, but both were lacking in the performance that the 911 offered.
If you're looking at one, just remember this: if it is a 911, use the same criteria you'd use for buying any other used vehicle (rust, engine condition, odometer milage, interior condition); if you're looking at a 924 or 944, use all those same criteria but keep in mind that you're getting a ''beginner's'' Porsche.

The repairs are extremely costly that is why they are so inexpensive. If you are buying this as your primary car, and you do not have lots of money, l would not do it. My friend had a 1982 porsche and the parts for it were at least 4x the price of a normal car. So if this is a fun project car then go for it, but if you are buying it because you need a car, and you can get a porsche cheap, l would reconsider.

look 4 good mileage, most common problem is maintenance never being able to pay it off before your insurance hits.Oh..dont worry you will never be able to afford to drive it 1000 miles.

The car is reliable if it was taken care of. If you take it to the sceduled maintemance, then it should be fine. Maintemance is costly and so are repairs because it is a High-end German car. For their performance, the gas mileage is good. The insurance will also be high because it is a German sportscar. There are not any common problems in a Porsche.

yeah we need to know which one u r looking for.
Restoration project? Make sure u also shop for a Technician if u do not already have one lined up. That can make the ownership experience so much better.
A 1980 anything is not a good choice as a daily driver. Best to have a second vehicle at the ready & reliable. Back in the day u kept a Beetle for winter! l guess u get a minivan today?
A 911 would be my only choice for a 1980

There is a great magazine about Porsche called ''Excellence'' and if you can find a back copy that covers 1980s 911s, you should buy it. Every month the magazine does an in-depth report on a different used Porsche: problem areas, how much they cost to maintain and repair, etc. On top of this research, before purchasing you should take the car to an experience Porsche specialist. He may charge you $100-150 to look it over but better that than buyers' remorse. D

What model?
If it is a 924 or 928, DON'T BUY IT.
If it is a 911, that was a good year.
Look for good service records, for a well-kept car. If the engine has more than 200K on it, it will be ready for a rebuild. This will cost $10,000 to $12,000 dollars, so u had better have ANY engine tested thoroughly prior to purchase (cylinder leakdown test).
Watch out for a ''heavy'' or hard to push clutch---that is a sure sign of clutch failure.
Also if u can avoid it, do not buy a targa model. Sunroof coupes r best.
Also the AC sucks on these cars, take it out. It just gets in the way of everything.
Good luck. The SCs r great cars if u find a good one.

If you can find a 1986-97 924S, those were bargain basement costs for a 944(with a 924 Body)
The 81-83 SC is are also excellent 911's. The later 911 is 84-89 had 3.2L, but were a bit ''lazy'' comared to the 3.0L in the SC's

If l were u l would find a local Porsche club & enlist their help. Any Porsche u buy from a used car dealer could have major issues just like buying from a private seller. Cars belonging to club members generally have a better chance of having had all their scheduled maintenance.
Parts will cost more for a Porsche than they will for a Chevy so keep in mind the fact that u should budget money each year for parts.
You might also consider getting ur hands on a buyers guide book like these for the 911
