They're quick, heavy but they drive light. Parts are EXPENSIVE for maintenence/repair. Large aftermarket/enthusiast support for them.

Parts r expensive, the 951s (944 turbos) r much faster (and wickedly moddable) for not much more in initial cost (bout 3 or 4k compared to the 7-8 for a nice turbo), but they handle very well & have a decent bit of spunk.
Its not a drag car. Dont expect it to be. It wasnt made as one, & an NA one wont be without big dollars.
i would not go for a 944 unless A: u have mechanical skill/knowhow of porsches (which im assuming u dont, because youre asking about them :P) & B: dont have a tight budget.
and theyre very fun to drive.

A 1987 Porsche 944 (plain jane-no turbo or ''S'' model) is a 2.5 liter four cylinder that makes roughly 150 HP.
You have to understand that back in 1987, 150 horses seemed like a lot. Unfortunately now, nearly 20 years later, ur average family car makes a lot more than that.
Sure, there is a horsepower to weight ratio to consider, as well as a 50/50 weight balance front to rear that makes the car have incredible handling, but lets face it, nobody wants to buy a Porsche & be outrun by a chick in a Scion.
Unfortunately, real performance parts for the 944 r few & far between. There is no real way to squeeze decent power out of that engine without spending thousands of dollars. At that point, u may as well spend an extra $2000 & buy a 944 turbo (also called the 951) or at least a 944S or S2. (The ''S'' versions use a 16 valve engine). Those already come with the bigger brakes, the better suspension, & the better body kit. Most of them also have Antilock Brakes & airbags, so (believe it or not) they're cheaper to insure too.

C'mon now. Be serious. ITS A 1987. Okay, so its a Porsche and you expect it to go fast but the reality is its OLD. AND Its high maintenance. You are not going to win many races but you will be able to Cruise in style.Enjoy the ride. Be a poser. Good luck.

It is a good starter car for a new Porsche enthusiast. As far as speed goes not that fast, & turbos were not available in 1987. There r aftermarket turbo kits but they r $$$ pricey, but the horse power gain is not worth the $$ spent. You may want to try a 1997 or 1998 Boxster, they r pretty fast & the handling is superb, corners like on rails.

Yes, it has lots of engine and very little weight. It is plenty fast. Get it checked out by a Porsche mechanic if you are thinking of buying one. There are some crappy models out there.

A non-turbo 944 is not fast by 2006 standards, no. But it will get out of its own way. If you want a fast 944, you must buy the turbo.

l have an 83' which is quite nice. The biggest concern to me is changing the timing belt every 35 to 40 thousand miles, when it breaks it can cause heavy damage to ur valve & even crack ur crank. It is a car to love & take care. Parts can be ordered online at Vertex in florida they've always treated me fair. The car is not fast from a take off stand still at a light, but it has great acceleration, superb handling & it looks to kill. l know people r always turning their head, a great boost to ur ego. High speed is 130mph. flooring it, maybe an 87' is better but l doubt it.

A porsche is still a PORSCHE no matter the years they are still fast cars. the 944 is still a fast car and will be able to out run many people. because of its design. but probalay l would buy for the same priece a older 911, or a 968

Hey Germanbeemer, why do u even bother? Do u simply like to read ur own drivel?
Porsche is r not all fast.
l own both a 69 & 97. You've most likely never touched one. But u claim to be an expert. And here u tell him to get an early 911, but in ur other answer, u say that older 911 is r crappy? Make up ur mind & stop leading people astray. In 69, the T had 110hp, the E had 120 & the S had 140 hp. These were not ''fast'' cars. Porsche was more concerned with handling, & won many races by reaching top speed & maintaining it due to superior handling, than with speed & accelleration. Do ur homework.
AS FOR THE ANSWER
The 87 944, assuming u r talking about a base model, not the turbo, or the ''S had a horsepower rating of 155 bhp. (The turbo first appeared in 86, The ''S'' in 87) The base engine was increased in 1987 over the previous 147 hp which was constant from 1983 to 1986. This was done by increasing the compression ratio of the engine to 10.2:1
Now the engine is a 2.6 L (2688cc) 8cyl, & the car weighs in at just a hair under 3000 pounds. This is fairly heavy when compared to the 911s & given the engine size.
Although not a slow car, they r certainly not the fastest thing around, either in their time, nor now. Like all engines Ferdinand designed however, they r quite ''torquey''.
So, for a fun, inexpensive sports car, they're a hoot. At home maintenance is fairly easy. But any major repairs can be costly.
Any thoughts on getting an early 911? They r a lot more fun to drive. A totally different experience with the engine in the rear.
Good luck
