Could someone help me better understand how this system works in the new 997 turbo and how it benefits in reducing turbo lag.

A Variable Geometry Turbocharger is capable to alter the direction of exhaust flow to optimize turbine response. It incorporates many movable vanes in the turbine housing to guide the exhaust flow towards the turbine. An actuator can adjust the angle of these vanes, in turn vary the angle of exhaust flow.

PORSCHE VTG Variable Turbian (NOT Turbo) Geometry
is a system that expertly changes the turbian baldes constantly & change very very fast to turn on the turbo faster, in a turbo car when u hit the throttle the turbos do not go on fast there drag or a few second wait till this large huge amount of power from the turbos just hit the wheels. Since this happens its uncomforable, dangerous, & not fast. When VTG is on there is almount no no no drag or wait for the turbos once u hit the throttle the turbo goes with the throttle movement, makeing the car start extremely fast & stay fast!!!
